We are Voyagers.

Like Ancestors of old, we are Strong, Inventive, Courageous and filled with wonder.
Sailing seas of knowledge, we seek understanding and use it with compassion.
Looking forward, we honor the past to better see our future.
We will find hope and success in spite of wind and change.
With our eyes to the heavens, fixed on guiding lights we know ourselves, our space, our time.
We will seek.
We will find.
We will know.
New Horizons.
We are Mighty Voyagers.

Discussion about Stabbing at West High

A Student mentioned a likeness to a game called "Whack your Teacher"

Kumu asked "Are you that easily influenced?" A unanimous "NO!"

Kumu said "Do you think it starts with learning right from wrong?"

Here is a simple exercise to teach you something about the Human Mind.

Paper People Exercise

Supplies:

One piece of Paper per Student

Directions:

1) Crumple up the Paper, step on it and mess it up real good.
(There were rather aggressive throws and stomps)
2) Now restore it.

Statement:
This is the way our mentality works. When we are emotionally injured our mentality is disturbed or crinkled like the lines in that paper. Sure you could smooth it out but you can never return it to it's original state.

3) Write a letter on this paper, asking someone to forgive you. Someone you feel you need to apologize to. You don't even have to really give it to them. The point of this exercise it to take responsibility for the way we make others feel.

Even, myself, as an Adult have to be conscious of the energy I put out into the World. People sometimes upset me. But I can't go around town getting into arguments with People. Bad things happen. We can take responsibility for the way we treat others and be more conscious of what they are feeling.
~
Brief Hawaiian History

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Statement: The Japanese had a military advantage because the US had all of their Carriers in one place. With the US debilitated, within 2 weeks Japan invades & occupies Brunei. Britain would later intervene and Brunei would gain Independence in 1984. Brunei is currently a very wealthy Country.

Discussion about Immigrants to Germany

Statement: I hope you will take a genuine interest in what is going on in Germany right now. In 20 years when you have your own Kids, you will be able to reflect on this and see the progress they have made.

Closing statement: In the Hawaiian History Documentary they talked about the Hawaiian Pearls from Pearl Harbor. I used to think that the Hawaiian Pearl species was wiped out. However, they are still around.
~

Statement: I want you to imagine that, Just like that apology on a piece of paper. You can smooth things out to a workable place. We can have that conversation with ourselves and choose right from wrong.

Define: Ecosystem

  1. An ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a system.

  1. Both Mauna Kea and Haleakalā are dormant volcanoes, part of the physical birth of Hawai`i from the ocean, millions of years ago. Their summits are home to unique ecosystems and rare and endangered species, many of which are found nowhere else on our planet.

#Kupuna Series

Garrett is an Extreme Surfer who broke World Records by surfing a 100 foot wave in Nazaré, Portugal,

Garrett was an Invitee to the Quicksilver Eddie.

Perpetuating the Sport by sharing with the next Generation, Garrett's Son, Barrel.

A Barrel is a surfing term to describe the tube shape created in a wave as it is breaking.

For the Big Wave Surfer, Tow-In Surfing became convenient for getting ahead of the larger waves and the result is an Epic ride.

Garrett astonished the World by Glacier Surfing in Alaska with Hawaiian Surfer Keali'i Mamala.

Keali'i Mamala has taken his own ride recently in Portugal.

Anatomy of Waves gives the technical terms for surfing waves and describes how they would be measured.

Wave Power is a sustainable power collected from the energy of Waves, Hawaii is the first to harness this power.

Make a Plan to address the situation in the future

Activity;

Web of Community

Object: Teach Kids the Web Connections of their Own Neighborhood

Materials: A ball of yarn and a class of Students

Instructions: Students stand in a circle and the Teacher asks questions of Commonality. The yarn is strung between students with the Commonalities.

Sample Questions:

Who lives by the School?

What street do you live on?

Who else lives on that street?

Who shops at (Insert local grocery store)?

Who else shops there?

Who has a parent or family member working for the school?

Who goes to (insert name of church)?

Who else goes to church there?

Who eats at (insert name of local restaurant)?

Who else eats at that restaurant?

Who's Teacher is (insert name of Teacher)?

Etc.

Result:
By creating this web of yarn there should be a remarked amount of crisscrosses to each Student. Do not stop until each Student has had the opportunity to hold the yarn and pass it to another neighbor.

We are all connected to each other in one way or another. We will cross paths many times in life. We can make our interactions negative or positive. I encourage you to error on the side of Compassion~
